Best Time to Visit Alleppey | My Personal Experience

I’ve been to Alleppey many times, and each season has its own special charm. But there are certain times when the weather is just right, making the whole experience much more enjoyable.

  • October to February (Winter): In my opinion, this is the best time to visit Alleppey. The weather is cool and pleasant, which makes it perfect for spending time on the backwaters or relaxing by the beach. I always tell my friends and family to visit during these months.
  • March to May (Summer): During these months, it gets pretty hot in Alleppey. However, if you don’t mind the heat, it’s still a great time to visit since there are fewer crowds, and the resorts offer some great deals.
  • June to September (Monsoon): The monsoon season brings heavy rains, making the backwaters look even more beautiful. I love visiting during this time for the greenery, but you should be prepared for rain, which can affect outdoor plans.

If you ask me, October to February is the perfect time to visit Alleppey, especially if it's your first time. The weather is pleasant, and you can enjoy everything this beautiful place has to offer.

General Tips for Visiting Alleppey

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit Alleppey is between November and February. During these months, the weather is cooler, making it more comfortable for sightseeing and outdoor activities. The backwaters and beaches are also best enjoyed during this time.

Clothing and Essentials

Light, breathable clothing is best since the weather can be warm and humid. Don’t forget to pack sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun.

Stay Hydrated

The weather in Alleppey can get hot, so it's important to carry water with you, especially when you’re out exploring for long periods.

Booking Houseboats

Alleppey is famous for its houseboats. If you're planning to stay on a houseboat, it's best to book in advance. Many houseboats also offer day trips if you prefer a shorter experience. Make sure the boat is clean and has all necessary facilities before booking.

Local Transport

For getting around the town, auto-rickshaws are the most convenient and affordable option. You can also rent a bicycle if you prefer a slower pace of exploring.

For longer distances, taxis or rented cars are easily available.

Respect Local Culture

Kerala is known for its rich culture and traditions. When visiting religious sites like temples, it’s important to dress modestly and respect the local customs. Remove shoes before entering temples and avoid taking photos unless allowed.

Cash and ATMs

Although card payments are accepted at larger hotels and restaurants, it’s always a good idea to carry cash, especially if you’re shopping in local markets or traveling to more remote areas. ATMs are available in town, but it’s wise to keep some money on hand.

Local Cuisine

Don’t miss out on trying the local food! Kerala’s cuisine is flavorful, and Alleppey offers plenty of places to enjoy traditional meals like appam, fish curry, and the famous Kerala sadya (a vegetarian feast). Always ask about the spice level if you’re not used to spicy food.

Safety Tips

Alleppey is generally a safe place for tourists, but it’s always wise to keep your belongings secure while travelling. Be cautious in crowded areas, especially during festivals or busy seasons.

Local Festivals

If you're lucky, you might visit during one of the many local festivals. Nehru Trophy Boat Race in August is a popular event, where you can watch traditional boat races. Attending a festival is a great way to experience Kerala’s vibrant culture firsthand.

My Tip:

  • Entry Fee: Most attractions are either free or charge a small entry fee.
  • Activities: Boat rides, sightseeing, cultural experiences.
  • What to Bring: Sunscreen, a hat, water, and light clothes.
  • Best Time to Visit: November to February for the best weather.

How to Get to Alleppey: My Personal Alleppey Experience

When I planned my trip to Alleppey, I found getting there quite simple. Alleppey (also known as Alappuzha) is well connected by road, rail, and water, making it accessible from several major destinations in Kerala.

Alleppey to Cochin/Kochi

  • Distance: About 53 km (1.5 hours by road)
  • If you're coming from Cochin International Airport, Alleppey is just a short drive away. You can take a taxi or use public buses that operate frequently between Kochi and Alleppey.
  • Tip: It’s easy to arrange a car from the airport or Kochi city. Prepaid taxis are available at the airport, and it's a quick journey to Alleppey.

Alleppey to Kovalam

  • Distance: About 175 km (4.5 hours by road)
  • Kovalam is known for its beautiful beaches, and getting to Alleppey from there involves a longer road trip. I took a private taxi, which made the journey comfortable. Buses are also available if you're on a budget.
  • Tip: If you're traveling by car, you can enjoy beautiful coastal scenery on your way from Kovalam to Alleppey.

Alleppey to Munnar

  • Distance: About 173 km (4.5 hours by road)
  • Munnar’s tea gardens and misty hills were on my itinerary after Alleppey. The road to Munnar takes you through picturesque landscapes, and I found it best to book a private taxi for a comfortable and scenic ride.
  • Tip: If you're planning to drive, leave early in the morning to avoid traffic and enjoy the beautiful hill roads.

Alleppey to Thekkady

  • Distance: About 140 km (4 hours by road)
  • Thekkady, home to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, is an easy road trip from Alleppey. Buses and private taxis are the best options for this journey.
  • Tip: The roads are winding, so if you get motion sickness, make sure to carry medicines.

Alleppey to Varkala

  • Distance: About 117 km (3 hours by road)
  • Varkala, with its cliffs and beaches, is another destination easily reachable from Alleppey. I took a train for this journey, which was quite convenient. Trains run frequently between the two places.
  • Tip: You can either take a direct train or travel by road using a bus or private taxi.

Cochin to Alleppey

  • Distance: About 53 km (1.5 hours by road)
  • If you're travelling from Cochin (Kochi), the easiest way to get to Alleppey is by taxi or train. I’ve done both. The train ride offers scenic views of Kerala’s backwaters and lush landscapes, while a taxi allows for a quicker, more personalised trip.
  • Tip: The train from Cochin to Alleppey is budget-friendly and comfortable, with frequent services throughout the day.

Wayanad to Alleppey

  • Distance: About 305 km (8 hours by road)
  • Travelling from Wayanad to Alleppey is a bit of a long journey, but the scenic beauty makes it worthwhile. You can take a bus or hire a taxi. I suggest starting early to avoid traffic and to make stops along the way to enjoy the views.
  • Tip: Break the journey into parts if needed, as it’s a long drive, especially if you’re travelling with family.

My Tip:

  • Best Time to Travel: November to February is the best time to explore Alleppey, as the weather is pleasant.
  • What to Bring: If you're travelling long distances, pack some snacks, water, and comfortable clothing. If you’re sensitive to heat, bring a hat and sunscreen.

Activities: If you have time, explore houseboat rides, local food experiences, and backwater tours along the way to Alleppey.
